Clonard Road Cycling Club Race – Race Report from Marty Mannion
Clonard….. wheres that you may ask… I still haven’t a clue (on old Dublin Galway road, kinda close to Kinnegad). The racing season season has arrived.
If anyone’s been watching Paris Nice in the last couple of days it will give you a small glimpse of what racing in Ireland… in February/March actually looks like (minus the illegal tows from race director cars of course)
Huge numbers participated across all race categories on the day and the weather was brutal but not absolutely brutal which felt like a positive thing on the day. Galway Bay had 1 rep in the A2 Alan Cawley, 3 in the A3 Myself, Ronan McNamara (debut A3 race) and out on special release for the day Warren Blackburn. In the A4 category we had club representation from Brendan Keogh and Noel O Connor.
The route was pretty flat out to Kilbeggan and back covering 75k. Wind on the way out made for a tougher start and in my own race 2 breakaways were chopped down before the turn. A competitive showing from Alan Cawley in the A2 saw him narrowly miss the break and business end. In the A3 Ronan MacNamara told a wide line in the sprint and held out for an excellent 8th position out of a field of over 70. Someone had the nerve to puncture in front of me in the final K nearly killing me in the process as both myself and Warren rolled in with the bunch. In the A4 race Brendan Keogh led at the front (see his Roubaixesque pic on his fb page)for much of the race only to swarmed by those behind in the final gallop.
Great to be back on the road and doing what normal people think is complete madness.
Limerick this Sunday…. I hear it’s a hill finish
