First Race of the Spring Season
The first leg of the 2017 GBCC Spring League took place last night on the Oranmore – Loughrea out-and-back course. With a moderate to strong south-westerly the outbound journey was a quick one with some riders averaging 44-45 kph. The front group went off with a 3 minute handicap and a group of around 8 of these established a lead of about 30 seconds at the Loughrea roundabout. As the turn was completed a 3-rider break-away group passed the main bunch shortly after. This group consisted of eventual podium men: Alan Cawley, Sean McCarthy and Padhraic Forde and they soon burned off any attempts of a free ride from some of the hangers-on! They then targeted the escapees and reeled those in after a further few kilometres, however, with the likes of Noel O’Connor in fine form along with new-comers Felim Duignan and David Gordon with Rory Mooney doing some strong turns, the scratch riders were in for a dicey finish – justice prevailed and the 3 man break-away completed a 1-2-3 at the Water Tower, with Alan Cawley breaking away for a solo finish with 20 seconds to spare on the chasing group. The main scratch group came together with the 2nd handicap group and the bulk of these contested 11th to 15th positions.
It was great to see a big group out for the first race of the season and a huge congratulations to Alan Cawley for his win. A big thank you must go to the race director, marshals and support cars. Looking forward to Moycullen Hill already! On a more serious note, white line infringements will not be tolerated, particularly on the Moycullen-Bearna circuit, especially on the approach to Moycullen as riders jockey for position before turning the corner for the hill. Marshalls in the cars will be submitting video evidence to the race director, so there’ll be no hiding!!
