Galway Bay Juniors at Rás Mhaigh Eo
Five Galway Bay Juniors and Youths participated in Ras Maigh Eo last weekend in Westport. In the two day Ras Maigheo, Ben Vahey participated in his first ever open race. Ben is a first year junior who joined the club late last year and raced a few league races and the club championships last summer but until the weekend had yet to take part in an open race. Most people in their first race choose a relatively easy one day but Ben chose the 2 day A2/3/Junior race in Westport and to his credit finished the event improving his performances as the race went on.
In the Youth races Galway Bay CC had a number of cyclist sick or otherwise unable to race but nevertheless GBCC has four young riders participating, Ronan & Aoife Dirrane, Mikie McHale and Dion Darcy. All four with the exception of Dion participating in their first road race for GBCC.
In the Under 16 race Ronan Dirrane performed well in both the hill climb and Road Race finishing in the top half of a very strong field with the elite of Irish cycling participating.
In the Under 14 boys race both Mikie McHale and Dion Darcy were caught behind a crash which impeded their performace. Mikie was unfortunate to crash later in the race. Dion finished in the top half of the race.
In the Under 12 girls race Aoife Dirrane, the first ever girl to cycle for GBCC in a competitive race finished a fine 3rd in the hill climb and second in the road race.
Next Sunday Seven Springs have Youth races in Loughrea which hopefully our GBCC riders can build on their performances.
