Whelan wins the first race of truth – GBCC TT League

19 brave souls turned up for the opening timetrial of the GBCC TT league. The first race was a 10 km run rolling course along the Loughrea/Oranmore Rd. The riders pedalled out to the start line and then completed the 10 km flat out back towards Oranmore.

Conditions were ideal (apart from the cross/headwind!!) and riders set off at 1 minute intervals. Full TT gear was on display but a number of riders also rode using road bikes. Over such a distance and in those conditions the TT bike could give a 30 – 50 second advantage which the guys on road bikes should be aware of as it puts their performance in context.

The starters included TT experts such as Eoin Whelan, Derek Joyce (“fresh” from the Ras) and Dave Condon who has had some seriously good triathlon results recently in the USA. Martin Divilly, Donal Mahon and Ciaran Murphy are also reknowned against the clock and were looking sleek in their full kit. Clifford looked sleek with Tony Bourke’s TT bike and helmet but once he got the bike and started pedalling Bourke started to cringe as it seemed as if he had a pin stuck in the seat he moved around so much!

On the night it was Eoin Whelan who delivered on his pre-favourite tag with a powerful ride over the 10 km to finish in 13 minutes 24 s (44.8 kph). Eoghan Clifford was 2nd @ 16 seconds with Dave Condon 3rd and Donal Mahon 4th. Full results are below.

The opening league TT was a great success and well done to Eoghan Considine and Tony Bourke on the organisation. Riders can still sign up for the remainder of the league and the training of doing a TT is hard to beat so I’d advise anyone who can to sign up.
